There's a ton of information out there on how to lose weight with varying levels of helpfulness, healthfulness, or even accuracy. But whether you choose to loose weight by counting calories, living off grapefruit and cabbage soup, or opt for a diet full of cookies lasting success will only happen if you are mentally ready.

It's a frightening thought. How do you know if you are ready? We hear it over and over. Weight loss, especially significant weight loss, will change your life. No matter how much you want that, it is impossible to know life will be like after you have succeeded. There will be a different look in your eye when you look in the mirror every day. Your family and friends will relate to you differently. Your career prospects will open up more. You'll have choices in life you never thought you would have. And you will have the responsibility to make those choices and live with the consequences. If you don't make those choices, life will make them for you, and you will end up back at square one. Right where you started.

Statistics tell us that 95% of people who lose a significant amount of weight gain that weight back, often with an added bonus. Yo Yo dieting has been a personal epidemic for many, and perpetuates an extreme emotional situation which many overweight people have been in the habit of responding to by eating. In order to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, people often need to fight instincts that have become second nature to them. For many this challenge is far greater than any hunger pains or sore muscles they might experience from reducing their calorie intake or working out.

On the surface diet plans are easy with the venus factor. Many diet programs advertise themselves as being “the answer” to lasting weight loss as if there were one secret weapon. Generally, the most successful eating plans incorporate healthy, nutritious foods as the primary building blocks with treats only available in moderation. Most also involve regular exercise, some believe this should be more vigorous than others, but what is done and how it is approached will depend on both the physical and mental state of the person beginning the journey.

Once in a great while you will find an example of an obese person who wakes up one day, declares himself “ready” and starts working out a couple hours a day, subjects himself to specific calorie restrictions, and never looks back. Even if he is able to erase all the temptations of his previous life he will still have to deal with plateaus and possible injuries along the way. More realistically, he will experience everyday frustrations, major life tragedies, and a variety of bumps in his road. He will have great days where he makes all the right choices, and days that he gives in and spends a day going back to the person he used to be as if he were stepping into a pair of comfortable old shoes. Eventually, he will remember why he took the shoes off to begin with, and will recommit to his weight loss journey, until it happens again.

The road to fitness does not happen in a straight line. For most people, there are a lot of bumps and curves and loops along the way. Taking a “wrong” turn is not a failure, only a sign that there is something else to learn, something you thought you were ready for, but discovered you weren't quite there. Setbacks are important. They will always happen, and it is always up to you to get back in the game.

No matter where you start your weight loss journey, or whether it is your first or fiftieth time beginning your journey it is important not to ignore the mental aspect of weight loss. Taking time to sort through your emotional demons at the same time you are tackling your physical ones and finding a network of people who you can count on as you do both can make a big difference in your ability to reach your goals and maintain your new lifestyle as a healthier and happier person.
